25 years combined experience Melbourne HQ, nationwide service Enterprise migrations: 500 to 35,000 users

The migration imperative

Atlassian Server reached end of life in February 2024. Data Center ends new sales to new customers on 30 March 2026, existing customers lose the ability to expand or add apps by 30 March 2028, and the platform reaches full End of Life on 28 March 2029, all instances become read-only. Whether you're still running Server, evaluating Data Center, or already invested in Data Center, Cloud migration isn't optional, it's essential. But poorly executed migration creates more problems than it solves.

Organisations face data loss from botched transfers, extended downtime disrupting operations, broken integrations and workflows, user confusion and adoption resistance, and compliance gaps during transition.

The difference is systematic methodology. Design Industries has migrated organisations from 500 to 35,000 users, we know what works and what doesn't.

How it works

From assessment through to Digital Factory partnership, every step follows our Formula One precision approach

Migration assessment

(Free, 45 Minutes)

Every migration starts with understanding your current environment and defining your target state.

Environment Audit: What's running on your current instance? Apps, customisations, integrations?
Data Analysis: How much data? What needs to migrate? What can be archived?
Risk Assessment: What are the potential blockers? App compatibility? Data complexity?
Timeline Planning: When can you migrate? What business constraints exist?

Outcome: A clear migration roadmap with scope, timeline, risk mitigation, and investment.

Migration delivery

(2-24 Weeks)

Our systematic migration methodology minimises risk and disruption through six proven phases.

Pre-Migration Audit: Full environment scan and app compatibility check. Identify all blockers before starting,
Migration Planning: Detailed runbook and rollback procedures. Nothing left to chance
Test Migration: Full dry run in sandbox environment. Validate everything works before go-live.
Data Migration: Systematic transfer with full audit trail. Zero data loss, full audit trail
Cutover Execution: Coordinated go-live with minimal downtime. Planned, rehearsed, controlled.
Post-Migration Validation: Data integrity and integration verification. Confirm success before closing.

Typical Timelines: Small (2-4 weeks) • Medium (4-8 weeks) • Large (8-16 weeks) • Complex (12-24 weeks)

Investment: Tailored to your environment complexity

Transition to Digital Factory

(Ongoing Partnership)

Migration is the perfect moment to establish ongoing platform excellence. Once you're on Cloud, you have two paths:

Option A: Self-Sufficiency: You manage your Cloud instance independently.
Option B: Digital Factory: Ongoing licensing optimisation, support, and continuous improvement.

Cloud unlocks capabilities that Server never had, AI, advanced automation, continuous updates. Digital Factory helps you maximise these advantages.

Most enterprise clients choose Digital Factory for continuous optimisation.

Migration scenarios

Whatever your current state, we have a proven pathway to Cloud

Server to Cloud

Atlassian Server reached end of life in February 2024. If you're still running Server, migration is urgent.

Full Migration: Move everything to Cloud with data integrity preserved
Clean Migration: Archive legacy data, migrate only what's needed
Phased Migration: Product-by-product or team-by-team systematic transition

"Server end-of-life means Cloud migration isn't optional, it's essential for continued support and security."

Data Center to Cloud

Evaluating your Data Center investment against Cloud's evolving capabilities? We help you make the right decision and execute flawlessly.

Cost-Benefit Analysis: True TCO comparison including hidden Data Center costs
Feature Gap Assessment: What Cloud offers that Data Center doesn't (AI, collaboration)
Hybrid Strategies: Phased approaches for complex environments

"For most organisations, Cloud delivers faster innovation at lower total cost than Data Center."

Cloud-to-Cloud consolidation

Multiple Cloud instances from acquisitions, mergers, or organic growth? Consolidation reduces cost and complexity.

Instance Audit: Map all instances, identify overlap, plan consolidation
Data Merge Strategy: Systematic approach to combining projects and spaces
User Reconciliation: Single identity, unified permissions, clean governance

"Consolidation eliminates duplicate costs and creates a single source of truth for your organisation."

Data Center vs Cloud

Many organisations are evaluating the move from Data Center to Cloud. Here's what we see:

Factor Data Center Cloud
Infrastructure Self-managed servers, patching, upgrades Atlassian-managed, automatic updates
AI capabilities Limited or none Atlassian Intelligence, Rovo
Scaling Manual capacity planning Automatic scaling
Disaster recovery Self-managed DR infrastructure Built-in redundancy and backups
Total cost Licensing + infrastructure + staff Licensing only
New features Quarterly releases Continuous deployment
Collaboration Limited real-time features Full real-time collaboration

Note: Data Center remains appropriate for organisations with specific compliance requirements, air-gapped environments, or extreme customisation needs. For most organisations, Cloud delivers faster innovation at lower total cost.

Move to Atlassian Cloud with confidence. Planned, staged, reversible.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if our Server/DC apps don't have Cloud equivalents?
We find alternatives and workarounds. Most Marketplace apps have Cloud versions or comparable alternatives. Where gaps exist, we identify workarounds, alternative apps, or in some cases custom solutions. App compatibility is rarely a blocker, we assess this thoroughly during your Migration Assessment.
How much downtime should we expect?
Minimal. We execute migrations over weekends to minimise business impact. Test migrations validate timing before any production cutover, so there are no surprises. Exact downtime windows depend on your data volume and complexity, we'll confirm specifics in your Migration Proposal.
Can we roll back if something goes wrong?
Yes. Every migration has tested rollback procedures ready before we begin. We recommend keeping your old environment available (read-only) for a period post-migration as an additional safety net. The duration depends on your organisation's policies and risk tolerance.
Should we migrate all our historical data?
It depends. Some organisations benefit from a "clean start" that archives old data rather than migrating everything. Others need complete history for compliance or operational reasons. We'll assess your specific situation and recommend the right approach during your Migration Assessment.
How long should we keep our old Server/DC environment after migration?
This varies by organisation. Your data retention policies, compliance requirements, and risk tolerance all factor in. We'll help you determine the appropriate timeline, there's no one-size-fits-all answer.
How do I get started?
