The security challenge

Your Atlassian Cloud environment contains your organisation's most critical information: project plans, customer data, intellectual property, and strategic decisions. Yet many organisations run their Atlassian tools with default security settings, creating blind spots that put sensitive data at risk.

Common security gaps we see:

Users logging in with personal credentials instead of corporate SSO
Manual user provisioning creating access lag and orphaned accounts
No visibility into who accessed what, when, or from where
Sensitive data scattered across projects without classification
No alerting on suspicious activity or potential breaches

The result? Audit failures, compliance gaps, and unnecessary risk exposure, all while your security team lacks visibility into one of your most data-rich platforms.

Atlassian Guard closes these gaps with centralised security controls designed for enterprise requirements.

Why default settings aren't enough

Atlassian Cloud defaults optimise for collaboration, not security
Audit failures and compliance gaps stem from missing controls
Guard adds the centralised controls enterprise environments require

What is Atlassian Guard?

Atlassian Guard is Atlassian's enterprise security solution for Cloud products. It provides centralised identity management, access controls, and threat detection across your entire Atlassian organisation.

Note: Atlassian Guard was renamed from Atlassian Access in June 2024. If you currently have Access, you already have Guard Standard. The capabilities remain unchanged.

Guard comes in two tiers:

Included with Cloud Enterprise

Guard Standard

Extended audit logs (1 year)
Alert investigations & CASB integration

Guard Standard: identity & access foundation

Essential security capabilities for organisations moving beyond basic Cloud plans.

SSO & SCIM provisioning

Authenticate once via your existing identity provider — Okta, Azure AD, or Google Workspace — with user lifecycle automated through the same connection. No manual account creation, no orphaned accounts when staff leave.

API token controls

Visibility and control over API tokens that access your data. See which users have created tokens, when they were last used, and revoke access when needed.

Mobile app management

Apply security policies to Atlassian mobile apps. Enforce device encryption, disable screenshots, restrict data export, protecting company data on personal devices.

Organisation audit logs

Track administrative activity across your organisation. See who changed what, when, and from where. Essential for compliance and incident investigation.

Guard Premium: advanced protection

Proactive security monitoring and data protection for organisations with elevated security requirements.

Data classification & detection

Label content by sensitivity (Public, Internal, Confidential, Restricted) and automatically scan for patterns like credit card numbers, TFNs, and API keys appearing in unexpected places. Know what you have before you act on it.

Threat detection

AI-powered monitoring for suspicious activity. Get alerted on anomalous behaviour like unusual login patterns, bulk data exports, or access from unexpected locations.

Extended audit logs

One year of detailed activity logs (versus 6 months in Standard). Essential for compliance requirements and forensic investigations.

Alert investigations

Consolidated view of security alerts with context. Investigate potential incidents without switching between tools. Includes CASB integration for broader cloud security posture.

Implementation approach

Structured methodology that balances security hardening with user experience.

Phase Duration Activities
Assessment Week 1 Current state review, identity provider evaluation, compliance requirements mapping
Design Week 1–2 SSO configuration design, provisioning rules, policy framework
Implementation Week 2–3 SSO deployment, SCIM setup, policy configuration, testing
Enablement Week 3–4 Admin training, documentation, monitoring setup
Optimisation Ongoing Policy refinement, incident response procedures, compliance reporting

Typical timeline: 3–4 weeks for Guard Standard, 4–6 weeks for Guard Premium (depending on complexity).

Common implementation scenarios

The three Guard deployments we implement most often, and what each one delivers.

SSO enforcement

Challenge: Users logging in with personal credentials, no centralised authentication.
Solution: Configure SAML SSO with your identity provider, enforce SSO for all users, migrate existing accounts.
Outcome: Single authentication point, consistent password policies, simplified user experience.

Automated provisioning

Challenge: Manual user administration, delayed access for new starters, orphaned accounts for leavers.
Solution: Implement SCIM provisioning with your directory, map groups to Atlassian products.
Outcome: Instant access for new users, automatic deprovisioning, accurate licence utilisation.

Compliance readiness

Challenge: Upcoming audit requiring access logs, data classification, and security policies.
Solution: Deploy Guard Premium with data classification, configure audit log retention, implement security policies.
Outcome: Audit-ready documentation, demonstrable controls, ongoing compliance monitoring.

Guard + Teamwork Collection

Atlassian Guard Standard is included with Teamwork Collection Premium and Enterprise plans at no additional cost. This means organisations adopting Teamwork Collection get essential security capabilities built in.

Included with Teamwork Collection

We reduced a number of tools across regions that caused miscommunication and inefficiency, bringing everyone into a single platform. By using the DI Configuration Patterns, we rapidly scaled Atlassian from 500 to 7,000 users, at the bare minimum doubling the efficiency of our teams, who are working on core bank payment systems such as our .com.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Atlassian Access and Atlassian Guard?
They're the same product. Atlassian renamed Access to Guard in June 2024. If you have Access, you have Guard Standard. The capabilities are unchanged; only the name is different.
Do I need Guard if I'm on Cloud Enterprise?
Guard Standard is included with Cloud Enterprise at no additional cost. You're already covered for SSO, SCIM, and basic security policies. Guard Premium is an add-on if you need data classification and threat detection.
Can we implement SSO without SCIM provisioning?
Yes. Many organisations start with SSO enforcement and add SCIM provisioning later. We recommend implementing both for full security coverage, but a phased approach works well.
Which identity providers does Guard support?
Guard supports SAML 2.0, which includes most enterprise identity providers: Okta, Azure AD, Google Workspace, OneLogin, Ping Identity, and others. We'll confirm compatibility during your security assessment.
How long does Guard implementation take?
Typically 1 to 2 weeks for straightforward deployments. Complex environments with multiple identity providers or custom requirements may take 3 to 4 weeks.
What happens to existing users when we enable SSO?
Existing users migrate to SSO authentication. We plan this carefully to avoid access disruption, typically with a transition period where both authentication methods work.
